Recognized as the best trainer and handler of thoroughbred trotters in the country, Burr boarded horses for several prominent people, including President Ulysses S. Burr, a distant relative of Aaron Burr, built a half-mile race track and opened the Burr Equine Educational Institution.

They included the Whitmans, the Burrs and the Wicks.Ī natural offshoot to farming was the raising of horses and the Burr family contributed to much of Commack's early reputation as horse country. Commack's earliest settlers were mostly farmers. The first settlers shortened the name to Commac.ĪS owners of more than 3,500 acres they established homes and businesses. The document making the grant was called the Winnecommac Patent. In 1703, what is now the Smithtown portion was given by Lord Cornbury, Governor of New York, to Charles Congreve. It is the oldest Methodist church in New York State still in continuous operation.Ī century before the church was built, the Secatogue Indians sold what is now the Huntington portion of Commack to John Whitman (an ancestor of the poet Walt Whitman) and John Skidmore. The Commack Methodist Church, erected in 1789, still stands on Town Road. Admission is free.īy 1783, there were enough residents to form a Methodist congregation. The house is open on weekend afternoons Memorial Day through Labor Day. The three-bedroom farmhouse built by the Wick family in 1780, is now a museum housing furniture and artifacts representing late 18th century through early 20th century rural life. ''Commack has everything you could want, good shopping and restaurants,'' he said.Īmong the hamlet's amenities is the Hoyt House on the 133-acre Hoyt Farm Preserve. Monner, a retired school administrator who now does public relations and writes do-it-yourself books with his wife, Linda, moved to Commack from the Bronx 29 years ago. ''You could say all roads lead to Commack.'' ''The crime rate is low, the people are nice, the community is well established, and you can get to just about anywhere from here,'' said Fred Monner, the president of the 74-home Mayfair Woods Civic Association.
